The Exhibition

The 22 NCAD Textile Exhibition had a very successful opening and got it off to a fanstatic start, We had lots of praise for everyones work and the band Raglans, and thanks again to Aisling Farinella for opening the exhibition. We had a full house and are still getting lots of great reviews! We would like to say another big Thank you to all that were involved! THANK YOU!

My Shirt - Before Exhibition

Artist Statement:

I started off this project by picking a painting in the National Gallery that featured an Elizabethan Collar from there I studied and worked with various lace patterns. I projected lace patterns onto a shirt and recreating a pattern of my own. In my summer project I worked with trapping threads inside plastic laminate and so I worked with trapping the patterns inside laminate and plastic sleeves to make panels. These panels then are infused in areas of the shirt.

This list of 'items' are finally all getting a tick beside them i.e the venue, the posters, flyers, the wine, the who's doing what, the group artist statement has been written and getting put out there and on the blog, the invites are going out, the blog and the facebook page are all getting the hits. The who's hanging of the show is organised and all we need now are the shirts to be finished and the samples to be mounted and framed.

is an exhibition of dynamic, innovative work by Textile students from the National College of Art and Design. As a group we are exploring the line between fine art, craft and design using ‘the shirt’ as our inspiration and starting point. Within our work, we push the boundaries of traditional embroidery to create a collective range of diverse pieces. We hope you find our work interesting and stimulating.

A Trip to Ikea

Went up on Friday evening and picked out some nice white frames from Ikea so that's one less thing to worry about before Friday now to choose what samples to frame, whilst others are been sewed into the shirt so the heat is on now and its all go go go.

Poor old laminator is being overworked, he also has a big hole in him lol

Have been working some of the days from home recently I have the plan sorted in my head now and all I need to do is get all the work done now. And the best plan was to work from home firstly due to the fact my laminator has a big hole in it and with all the rain we are getting lately don't fancy bringing it all the way up to college and back and plug it in for a frying. So safer to not bring it out in the rain, also need the sewing machine and don't want to hog the one at college too much otherwise would be on it all day. So here are another few samples for you: (the last two got worked on more tonight so will post new pictures soon.

Working with Lace

After drawing some real life scale drawings of lace, I wanted to scale them up and draw them larger and more free handedly so I projected my images and lace on the projector. I then inserted my mannaquin with a plain white shirt into the picture to see how the lace would translate onto the shirt.

I then used some of my stitched samples under the projector to see how they would translate with the blue jay colour scheme.

Losing Shirt Sections and Gaining Inches in Collar

After looking at the painting in the National Gallery, and making several notes and sketchs the direction I tried first was to look at Elizabethan collars.

I also wanted to try insert areas of my lamented designs, so I considered maybe instead of working on a whole shirt take sections, so I removed areas from a shirt leaving only the seams, cuffs, collar and sleeves.

I got some Dog Buster collars to give me the impression of an Elizabethan collar and attached them to the 'shirt'.

Elizabethan collars are mostly made of lace, and my samples have a 'lace' feel to them ie the way threads lie and overlap and have sections of space through them so my next move is to work with lace.

Possible Merging of Blue Jay Patterns into Shirt

In Year 2, I did a project called Sagittarius, which resulted in pieces a notebook called 'Flightless' in this project I drew, painted and recreated images of a Blue Jay Wing.

During the Summer I got a project called 'Precious' and I wanted to continue with the Blue Jay Theme and what is more precious to a bird than its wings. Because of its stunning patterns and colours I believed they would make great samples. Here is some of the samples made inspired by the Blue Jay Wing. With the shirt project I want to try and recreate some of the patterns and techniques used in the Blue Jay Samples.

Very excited regarding the new brief and eager to get started, this is the brief in a nutshell its 5 pages long but have cut it down and given only the brief outlines.

TD3.1 Textiles – Embroidery ‘The Shirt’

This module has 3 stages

Historical research, technical sampling and development to a finished outcome that synthesises there 2 aspects.

It is accompanied by a series of illustrated lectures on the History of Embroidery that you must attend and present a folder of notes. These are designed to underpin this module and give you a historical and theoretical framework and to contextualise your project.

Module Aims and Learning Outcomes:

Aims:

To extend technical vocabulary in relation to personal translation of paperwork, and in a specific design context.

To gain understanding of the process of working on a site-specific commission.
To increase awareness of, and ability to translate mark-marking trechniques from paper to fabric.

To consider a variety of finishing techniques appropriate to textile art (2d or 3d)

The first stage of this project involved a visit to The National Gallery and some photos of what on view there at the present moment, unfortunately at the moment only the first floor is available to the public due to other floors undergoing work.

Choose to take a photo of this due to the fact the pillars had 'feather' like effect of layering going on and wanted to fuse my summer project of my blue Jay wing samples into the project.

Light display was beautiful and fun to see, also love the back of the display with its twists and turns of cables and plugs, could be fun though to try and punch holes into the shirt and stitch lots of eyelets and light up from behind and see if can create a light display like above. But for the moment need to stick to brief.

For the moment have picked starting points ie paintings have taken down the details and now to find the photos of the paintings online or books etc.
